Former
Oklahoma Captain Moore dies: Harry Moore, co-captain of Oklahoma's
first national championship football team in 1950 and an all-Big
Seven center for the Sooners, died Thursday in Oklahoma City.
He was 84. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday
at First Presbyterian Church in Edmond. Moore was one of the
Sooners' oldest World War II veterans when he arrived on campus
in 1947. Moore graduated from Blackwell High School in 1940,
the same year his father died, so Moore supported his family
working at a zinc smelter.
In 1942, Moore enlisted in the Marine Corps and during the war
served on the U.S.S. Idaho in the Pacific. Moore enrolled at
OU in 1947, a full year after most of the war veterans arrived
in Norman. Moore was a three-year letterman and a starter on
Bud Wilkinson's 1950 team that went 10-1 and won the national
title.
